Article: Thermal Imaging Revealing Draughts and More

Bayside Climate Change Action Group has been using a thermal imaging camera to uncover cold spots in the home. From draughts from construction gaps to insulation  flaws and even possums hiding in your roof.

If it saves you money on heating costs or helps uncover insulation installation mistakes it sounds good to us.

”You can really see where the problems are,” Ms May says. ”You can point it at the ceiling and see where the insulation is, and where it’s missing. You can see leaks coming from fridge seals. We’re trying to educate people about the way heat loss occurs.”

Article: Apartment Living Increases Sydney

The latest census revealed Sydney had more higher density dwellings than other Australian cities and that the number of private dwellings has decreased.

“In the five years since the 2006 census, the percentage of separate houses in Sydney has fallen from 60.9 per cent of all private dwellings to 58.9 per cent as high housing costs encourage the move to more densely populated communities.”

Article: Census Reveals Changing Australia

The 2011 census reveals lots of interesting new information about Australians. It was the first year that same sex marriage was an option, it seems we’re moving to WA and QLD and are becoming less religious but more multicultural.

This Daily Telegraph article also reveals unusual past questions like “Do you have a flush toilet?” and census related incidents like collectors being attacked by pigs.

Recent Claims: No Hot Water in Winter, Oh My!

Hot water systems failing is the worst thing I can think of to happen on these freezing winter mornings! We helped out two member’s this week to get their hot water systems (and mornings) up and running again!

  • A Rye VIC member’s hot water system was not working, they called us on Saturday (16/6/12 which saw a temperature min of 7 degrees) and we organised their thermostat to be replaced. The system is now fully functional again.
  • A Thornbury VIC member’s hot water system was not relighting, and so the system failed to work. They called us Tuesday (20/6/12 which saw temperatures as low as 3 degrees!) and we organised a plumber to replace their pilot injector and thermocouple and the system is working again!

Article: What is inflating my power bills?

We all know that we should be careful with how we use electricity in order to save on power bills. But what appliance is doing the most damage? What small adjustment would make the biggest difference. The SEGmeter – is a set of current sensors that detect the electricity flowing through the different circuits in your home and it could answer all your questions.

”It’s a really good way to show you where your energy black spots are – things such as my hot water unit. Some of them will be really low-hanging fruit, but they can be difficult to find without ongoing monitoring,” he says.

”It’s also a gentle reminder to check how you’re going, because behaviours can improve and they can also slip back.”

Article: Underoccupancy

The problem with only controversial solutions. How to get those with rooms to spare, like empty-nesters, to downsize to provide more room?

Read The Australian’s article on the subject

“Queensland Housing Minister Bruce Flegg revealed yesterday that a government audit had identified 8700 public housing properties with two or more bedrooms unoccupied – about 15 per cent of the state’s total stock.

In many cases, elderly people had stayed on in the housing commission home in which they raised their children, even though they no longer needed the extra space.

When extrapolated, the Queensland data suggests that more than 40,000 public housing lots are under-occupied around the nation.”
